The Stage was Set for Devised Drama

Oct 10, 2024

Our talented GCSE and A Level dramatists took to the stage to present their devised work to live audiences.

First up were our Fifth Form GCSE Drama candidates who created their own, original pieces of theatre using various drama techniques and theatre practitioner methodologies. The pupils researched significant socio-historical events drawing on the Nazareth House Orphanage scandal and the treatment of women in mental health facilities from the 1920s to the 1960s. Both pieces of work were highly engaging and informative.

Our A Level Drama candidates drew inspiration from Harold Pinter’s iconic play The Birthday Party. Employing the methodologies of theatre practitioner Steven Berkoff, the audience was transported into a dystopian future ruled by ‘Centurian’, a faceless, dictatorial artificial intelligence that dominated society.

This outstanding piece of work underscored the importance of free will and the imperative human need to resist oppression. Ably supported by Kacy (Lower Sixth, Vanbrugh), this exceptional performance highlighted the extraordinary ambition and talents of Oscar (Upper Sixth, Vanbrugh) and Henry (Upper Sixth, Harcourt).
